NFTs are unique cryptographic digital assets with distinctive code and metadata. Essentially, an NFT metadata is a set of data that identifies a specific NFT. They are properties or details that define an NFT asset. It includes its name, description, supply, transaction history, and other important information about an NFT. It can also be a reference to any other digital asset. While an NFT and its properties depend on metadata, they are not identical. Although the metadata is linked to an NFT, they are stored as separate entities on a blockchain. Meanwhile, when conducting a transaction with an NFT, the metadata offers further information about the NFT. When using NFT marketplaces on Opensea, you must have come across an option to freeze your NFT metadata. Simply, freezing your metadata means you are locking its information on an Interplanetary File System (IPFS). This way, the NFT’s metadata cannot be edited or changed. However, what are the pros and cons of locking your metadata? This article will take you through everything you need to know about freezing your NFT metadata on Opensea, its benefits, and caveats.

What is an NFT Metadata?

Metadata simply gives further data or information about another data. In the same way, NFT metadata is a set of data that defines the properties and contents of an NFT. NFT metadata is important to an NFT as it defines its characteristics and important properties like the name, stats, traits, transaction history, description, and so much more. They are stored as JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) files on-chain or off-chain. If the metadata of an NFT is stored on a chain, it means that the NFT metadata and the NFT it defines are stored on a blockchain network. While on-chain storage is much more secure and preferred, storing the huge size of underlying NFT files can be expensive and inefficient. This way, many creators prefer storing their NFTs or NFT metadata off-chain. This way, either one or both of them is stored on a centralized or decentralized third-party file storage system. This can include Amazon Web Services (AWS), Google Drive, or decentralized peer-to-peer file-sharing servers like the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS). When an NFT is minted on a blockchain, its metadata and other data are stored on the IPFS. This provides a secured, transparent and decentralized environment like the on-chain storage. Afterward, you can choose to freeze or unfreeze the metadata. If you freeze the metadata, it simply means that you are locking all the properties and metadata of your NFT permanently on the IPFS. This way, they cannot be removed, edited, or tampered with by anyone anymore. Therefore, aside from that, it makes your NFT data accessible to intending buyers and ensures that you don’t lose your metadata to unauthorized edits or alterations by anyone.

To confirm if the process was successful, you can check the DETAILS section of your NFT page. You can also check it under the FREEZE METADATA heading.

Conclusion

The argument of whether to freeze your metadata or not boils down to your preference. While it has greater advantages, especially to creators, its only disadvantage is that it cannot be reversed.

Therefore, if you have any changes to make to your NFT or collection, once you free its metadata, you cannot rectify them.

That said, if your metadata is not frozen, they are stored in centralized storage. Therefore, if anything goes wrong with it, you will lose all your data.

However, decentralized storage with IPFS ensures your data have immutable and indomitable protection with blockchain technology.

Additionally, the argument of being editable or not, is a factor to consider with freezing NFT metadata. While many argue that an NFT owner can change unfrozen metadata, some believe the sole editor of an NFT is the creator.

However, if the owner can change the metadata, an artist or creator may lose rights to an NFT and, therefore, associated royalties. Therefore, it is safer to be safe than sorry.

NFT Metadata Types on OpenSea Marketplace

Sneak peek at different types of NFT metadata on the OpenSea marketplace.

This article embodies NFT metadata and different types of metadata on OpenSea Marketplace.

Metadata is essentially the information about data. Metadata of an NFT is simply the attributes of an NFT like name, description, image and other properties.

In OpenSea Marketplace, where we can trade our NFTs, we could find different types of NFT metadata as follows:

Editable Metadata

When we directly create our NFT on OpenSea without any custom smart contracts (via lazy minting), such NFT metadata will be treated as Editable and its creator can update its properties later.

Create your NFT on OpenSea directly as follows:

After creating the NFT, you can verify the metadata type as Editable.

Frozen Metadata

Frozen metadata refers to metadata that is stored in a decentralized storage platform. In OpenSea, when we freeze our metadata, it is get stored in a decentralized file system which then can be used by other users as well. We have to pay a gas fee to freeze the metadata. Such metadata is secured and hence can’t be taken down by a single user. Once it is frozen, its metadata can’t be edited further.

How to freeze metadata on OpenSea?

  1. First, you need to create your NFT on OpenSea.
  2. Go to edit your NFT where you could find an option to freeze the metadata as follows:

3. After clicking on freeze, you will get a prompt to confirm complete freezing as below:

After freezing metadata, you can verify the metadata type as Frozen.

Centralized Metadata

When we create an NFT via OpenSea UI (via lazy minting), the metadata will be Editable first. With the first purchase or transfer of that NFT, the metadata will get hosted on OpenSea’s server and it will become centralized and hence its creator will not be able to edit its properties.

For example, when we transferred the NFT from the creator’s wallet to some other wallet, the metadata type becomes Centralized.

Should I freeze my NFT Metadata?

When trying to add a new item for sale, you’ll always see the option of either freezing the NFT metadata or not.

Before making that decision, I believe you should understand the concept of freezing metadata, the pros and cons, and how much is involved.

What does it mean to freeze NFT Metadata?

NFT metadata is what defines the properties of a piece. They include the name, image and video associated with it, description, properties, and stats.

During the minting of NFTs, the metadata and other associated files are saved on the Interplanetary File System (IPFS).

IPFS is a distributed system for storing and accessing files, websites, applications, and data.

With IPFS, we have a secure, transparent, and decentralized way to host the metadata of digital assets.

Once the metadata is hosted on the IPFS, you have the option of keeping it frozen or unfrozen.

Freezing the NFT data means locking it up permanently on the IPFS. The properties of the NFT will be permanently locked and stored on the file storage system and cannot be edited or removed.

What are the advantages of freezing my NFT metadata?

Freezing your metadata ensures that your metadata is permanently locked and stored on a decentralized file storage system making your data accessible to your buyers to view and make informed decisions.

It shields you from the risk of ever losing your metadata or it being edited by a foreign body.

Are there disadvantages of Freezing my NFT metadata?

I wouldn’t call them disadvantages per se but I think there are times or occasions when it’s best to leave your metadata unfrozen depending on the NFTs use case.

For instance, if an NFT is serving as a functional game piece, the metadata should be left unfrozen to showcase the dynamic abilities and statistics of the NFT.

So while playing the game, you can unlock new properties to the NFT metadata as you make progress.

This is a way to incentivize buyers to play more and create a new and unique NFT character.

Doesn’t that sound intriguing?

The baseline is that you have to consider the use case of your NFT to decide if the metadata should be frozen or not.

How much does it cost to freeze my NFT metadata?

It’s completely free to freeze your NFT metadata but you have to pay some gas fee for the action to be processed.

How do I freeze my NFT metadata?

I’ll be using Opensea as a case study. To freeze your metadata on Opensea, go to “My Collections” and select the item you want to freeze.

Click on “edit my item”. Search for the “freeze metadata” section and click on the toggle to enable the feature.

click on “Freeze” once the toggle is one.

You’ll get a prompt to confirm that all your information is correct and how it should be because once frozen, there’s no going back.

Once confirmed, you accept and click on “Submit transaction”.

You sign into your wallet and confirm the gas fee to complete the process.

With this done, your metadata is frozen.

Conclusion

Before you decide to freeze your NFTs metadata or not, you have to consider the use case(s) of the asset.

Freezing your metadata has its advantages likewise leaving it unfrozen.

Choose wisely. Make informed decisions. Don’t freeze your NFT metadata because everybody you know is freezing theirs.
